You do not need a handrail on the first two bottom steps.
Banister regulations. Handrail graspability to be either type i or ii with a minimum 1 1 2 inch clearance from a wall. A 100mm sphere should not be able to pass through any openings. Stairs should have a handrail on at least one side if they are less than 1000mm wide. The height of the top of the handrail shall be consistent through the ramp or stairs and any landings.
Maximum riser height is 7 3 4 inches. No riser shall vary from another by more than 3 8 inch. Handrail height on the stairs should be no less than 34 inches and no greater than 38 inches. Above this width handrails should be provided on both sides.
Handrail height to be placed a minimum 34 inches to 38 inches. The way this is measured is to begin at the leading edge of the stair nosing and run an imaginary vertical line upward until it reaches the top of the railing. For stair rail systems installed on or after january 17 2017 the top rail and handrail must be separate. Minimum domestic handrail heights of 900mm for both stairs and landings public handrail heights should be a minimum of 900mm on stairs and 1100mm on landings. In all buildings handrail height should be between 900mm and 1000mm measured from the pitch line to the top of the handrail. No tread shall vary from another by more than 3 8 inch.
The height of a handrail measured vertically above the floor walkway surface or the nosing of a stair tread shall not be less that 900mm or greater than 1100mm as shown in figure 5 3 and 6 1. As we cited in osha s guidelines above and as you will read in every expert source on proper stairway railing or handrail or banister design in our references at the end of this article to be usable and functional a handrailing must be of a size and shape than can be easily grasped must be at the proper height above the steps measured at the tread front nose must be separated from. It is also a building regulations requirement that no openings in any balustrading should allow the passage of a 100mm sphere. The top rail must be at least 42 inches in height 1910 29 f 1 ii b and the handrail must be 30 to 38 inches in height 1910 29 f 1 i as measured at the leading edge of the stair tread to the top surface of the rail.
Handrail height is the height of the handrail in relation to the stairs. Stairways shall be a minimum of 36 inches wide and shall be equipped with a handrail. Staircase building regulations are covered by further regulations parts m1 and m2. In a dwelling this is 900mm and external balconies must have a height of 1100mm from the datum to the top of the handrail.
